One thing I noticed on a recent trip to London was just how popular matcha is over there – it was like the donut craze in Dublin in the 2010s. Everywhere I turned, there was a matcha bar or a café proudly advertising its green elixir. From cool London creatives to finance bros, it seemed like everyone was sipping on matcha.
Slowly but surely, the drink has made its way to Galway, so I set out on a mission to find where to get the best matcha in Galway.
What is matcha?
Matcha is essentially green tea ground into a fine powder. Originating in China, its deep green colour comes from the shade-growing process. While some say it tastes like grass, in my opinion if the matcha is high quality and made right, you shouldn’t need syrups or sweeteners at all.

Fairhill, Galway City
Smooth and well-balanced, not too bitter, not too sweet. The cafe is also perfect for a browse through the collection of beautiful design wares. The window seat hates to see me coming.
Jungle Café, Galway City
Jungle Café’s açaí bowls are some of the best in the city and their matcha is just as impressive. With its unique interior, I always bring visiting friends here.
Down The Lane, Tuam
I may be biased as a Tuam native, but this is hands down the best matcha in Galway. Always the perfect consistency and never needs sweetener. I remember seeing that they brought in a matcha expert when they started serving it, and it shows!

Known for its indulgent hot chocolates and chocolate wall, Truffle also does an incredible matcha. If you have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend trying it with coconut milk and a splash of vanilla syrup, pure magic.
