Tour a Warm, Minimalist Haven in Lough Atalia

Whether in fashion or interiors, black is classic. Strong and sleek, it is often added in small, intentional splashes to ground a space. It can be tricky to pull off in large volumes, but somehow, this striking monochromatic Lough Italia project from design firm Galway Interior Design has pulled it off.
The trick? Beautiful, simple materials and a very clear vision. From the black steel staircase to the warmth of the stained wood cabinets, the overall feel is calm, cool – and, crucially, comfortable.
“The house is an example of modern minimalism that is neither cold nor austere but rather filled with warmth and a welcoming atmosphere,” says founder Magdalena Walecka. “Black, as the primary colour motif, creates an atmosphere of quiet elegance. It gives the interiors character, adds depth, and makes the space timeless.”

Unusually, the project’s ultimate end use and purpose wasn’t finalised at the start of the project. “It presented us with an interesting challenge,” reflects Magdalena. “We had to consider three different scenarios – a home for a family, a couple, or a property intended for rental.”
Regardless of who would end up enjoying the space, the duo were determined that the design introduce a sense of tranquility into each open space. “It was one of the key principles guiding our design process,” says co-founder Jacek Staniewski. “Our projects invite a relationship with space, where architecture is not just a backdrop but an integral part of daily life.”

While the property boasts many standout features – including a car turntable driveway and not one but two saunas (one of them concealed behind hidden doors), it is the central black steel staircase that steals the show. Serving as the focal point of the home, it starts at the ground floor, with concrete cladding giving way to timber. “This is the heart of the project, and we used just three materials: metal, concrete, and wood,” says Jacek.
Designed to appear as if it is “floating” in space, it ascends in a single fluid motion, introducing a sense of lightness and maximising the amount of natural light. “Throughout the day, the soft and warm natural light filtering through the suspended staircase fosters an atmosphere of serenity and harmony,” he says.

In the kitchen, grey-toned concrete reflects the light and adds a cool, raw edge to sleek black joinery and furniture, while work and sleep spaces lighten and soften up. “We deliberately introduced the natural stain of the veneer in the bedrooms, which promotes relaxation after a long workday,” explains Magdalena.
“The house is an example of modern minimalism that is neither cold nor austere but rather filled with warmth.”

“The fabrics and accessories feature light colours, and the room furnishings are minimalist but sufficient for the functional use of the space.”
However, nothing proves how much this is a space designed to maximise R&R than the ‘hidden’ sauna. Cleverly concealed in a room located on the garden side of the house, at first glance, the room does not reveal its true purpose. “It looks like a space for relaxation, with a tall built-in structure creating an intimate atmosphere,” says Magdalena. “Only when a button is pressed does the sauna slide out from the side cabinetry, providing space for relaxation for several people.” If that wasn’t enough, a nearby shower also functions as a steam sauna.

Lighting also plays a crucial role creating a space that is relaxing to be in. “Light is not only functionality but also emotion – it’s what makes the home a true oasis of warmth and harmony,” says Magdalena. “Instead of a single harsh light source, we introduced several spotlights, LED strips, wall sconces, and smart lighting that mimics natural light, diffusing its glow and adding depth to the interior. The entire system is integrated into a smart home.
Magdalena and Jacek worked on every aspect of this project – “from digging the hole in the ground to placing the teaspoon in the drawer!” – and are still involved in it now as it is currently available for short-term rental, allowing others to experience the home’s unique atmosphere for themselves.
