In the heart of Toronto, where the city buzzes with endless possibilities, Shimmy and Katie found each other in the most modern of ways – through a dating app.

They had moved to the city in 2021 to pursue their careers, Shimmy from Melbourne and Katie from Newry, both unaware that fate had something more in store.

Their first date at a local outdoor beer garden, set against the backdrop of a warm Toronto summer evening, where Katie's infectious laugh and witty humour captivated Shimmy, despite her being fashionably late.

Shimmy’s patience and calm demeanour left a lasting impression on Katie, who couldn’t stop thinking about him after they parted ways that night. “We immediately planned date number two the following day,” she remembers fondly.

From Canada with love: the path to forever

The couple’s journey to their wedding day was a labour of love, involving family from across the globe. Planning a wedding from thousands of miles away might seem daunting, but with the help of Katie’s parents, Paul and Sharon, the process was smoother than they ever imagined. “Sharon was like a Swiss knife, handling everything from floral arrangements to bridal party coordination,” Shimmy explains.

Their wedding day was a true celebration of two cultures coming together. From the chapel at St. Agatha’s Church to the reception at Harvey’s Point, the celebrations were steeped in traditions that honoured both families

For Shimmy and Katie, the highlight of the day was having their loved ones from nine different countries gather in one place to celebrate their love. Their advice to other couples planning their big day? “Enjoy every moment; the day flies by. Don’t sweat the small details. It will be a celebration you’ll always remember.”
